A New Way to See Art: Inclusive Digital Journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Masterpieces

As part of the European ERASMUS+ project iNCLUSION: Up-skilling Higher Education Students to Create Transformative Cultural Experiences for Audiences with Disabilities, the Balkan Museum Network has created a new set of digital resources promising to bring museum collections closer to people with disabilities.

At the heart of this initiative is the interactive e-book Journey through Bosnian and Herzegovinian Art, which invites readers to explore the stories and digital representations of eight renowned artworks from the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Gallery of Portraits Tuzla.

The original pieces were created by prominent BiH and foreign artists, including: Adela Behr, Rajka Merćep, Lazar Drljača, Roman Petrović, Danijel Kabiljo, Mica Todorović, and Heinrich Ludwig Jungnickel.

Each story weaves together facts about the artists’ lives while offering glimpses into Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural and historical landscape. To ensure that everyone can experience the art in their own way, the e-book offers audio narration, sign language interpretation, animations, videos, and textual stories written in an easy-to-read standard.

Through these stories, readers can discover how Roman Petrović created his powerful Street Children series, what crafts once filled the streets of Baščaršija, and how Adela Behr—the first formally educated female painter in Bosnia and Herzegovinapaved the way for generations to come.

After a testing phase which is currently under way, Journey through the Art of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be used in the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina museum as part of additional activities and programs for disabled audiences.

The e-book will also be available on request to all museum visitors—because art belongs to everyone.
